Tips from an OIT NetTech

  1. The school network has three parts, an AFS (Unix) system, a Microsoft Active Directory system, and Lotus iNotes server for our email. By "system", I mean that you will be given disk space for each of these services. Also, you will be given a password for these in your mailbox, and, while these passwords are set to be the same at first, they are mutually exclusive. Thus changing one does not change the others, except if you were to fill out the form at the Helpdesk (x-4357).
  2. Always remember your passwords. But if you do forget, there is, as mentioned, a form to fill out at the Helpdesk (x-4357) to change them.
  3. A phone cord is NOT a network cable. If you are reading this, you have already figured that out.
  4. The CDs that came with your computer should remain with your computer. If you have a problem with your computer, they may come in handy. So, don't send them back home or leave them at home.
  5. Morpheus, KaZaA, Grokster, LimeWire, etc = BAD. File sharing has been a huge problem in the past. These programs ate up a lot of bandwidth and made the network really slow. Students filesharing do face reprocussions, potentially from both OIT and agencies like the RIAA and MPAA.
  6. Should you have any problems with your computer (not related to our network), you can call the Helpdesk (x-4357). We'll help you as much as we're allowed. For all intents and purposes, though, it would most likely be quicker to call your manufacturer's tech support, be it Dell, Gateway, Sony, HP, etc. Also, the Computer Sales and Service Center offers technical support for a fee.
